Japan Provides Safe Water in Kitgum and Lamwo

Japan has handed over to the people of Kitgum and Lamwo 13 boreholes that have been constructed under “The Project for Improvement of Access to Safe water in Kitgum and Lamwo Districts” funded by its Grants Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The 220 million Uganda shilling Grant was signed between the Embassy of Japan and Lutheran World Federation in November 2011 and was utilized for drilling the boreholes and training the water user committees.

H. E. Kazuo Minagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, handed over the boreholes to the community at a function held at Acutumer Village in Kitgum Matidi Sub-county. He emphasized that as the people were now resettled at their villages, the provision of accessible safe water would reduce the long journeys in search of water hence enable them to engage in more productive activities.

The donation by Japan this time is part of the GGP scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, 155 projects have been funded under the scheme in Uganda since its inception in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
